2012 SL Appreciation Day & the featured marque at Cars and Coffee Irvine
Thank you MBCA members, Mercedes enthusiasts, Evosport Engineering/MBBS Racing and MBUSA for another great SL Appreciation and Mercedes Day in Southern California. A special thanks to Rich Leamon for his help and expertise.
It was a very early start for us this year because we had something special on tap, an AMG race car debut. By 5:00 AM the car was prepped and covered waiting for the crowds and what crowds we had. Over 100 Mercedes vehicles and hundreds of spectators.
We reserved two areas this year in anticipation of a big turn out and by 5:30 both were filling up quickly. With race cars old and new, the fabulous 300 SL gullwings and roadsters and SLs of every decade. There were two cars from the 1930s and AMGs old and new. Some B-Class hydrogen fuel cell cars and one gasoline version sandwiched between them. MBUSA brought the oldest car a 1934 150 Sport Roadster and the newest, a 2013 GL 350 that is not yet available for sale. There were cars for everyone to enjoy from classics to tuners. Where else but California for Star watching after the sunrise?
By nine the crowds and cars departed and some headed over to the M-B Classic Center open house and part II of SL Appreciation Day. Frames, engines and bodies in various stages of restoration with close-up, hands-on displays. Over the next couple of hours people strolled with coffee and doughnuts in hand through the museum and in areas not usually available to the public.
